The Poppy Fields, Large painting measuring 160 x 120 x 2 cm on two canvases (diptych). Each canvas measures 80 x 120 x 2 cm. Oil, acrylic and enamel on canvas.
A sea of red. …ripples in the breeze. The blood of men, therein they lie.
When I look at the red hillside I see the beautiful contrast of the flowers and sky. I feel uplifted by the colour and renewal of life. But I remember. Young men. Fields spilled with blood. A sacrifice obscene. The Poppy Fields.
The Poppy Fields has been created on two canvases (Diptych) designed to be hung next to each other. I have used an expressionist style of painting to build movement and depth into the landscape. Flecks of iridescent gold paint catch and reflect light and suggested floral shapes define the scene. The Poppy Fields has been kept purposefully simple in design. I wanted an expanse of red set against blue skies which would feel open and endless, like a window onto the world. I hope the viewer can feel themselves in the field. The Poppy Fields.
