Hubba Bubba Candy Rose is an abstract representational study of a hedgerow next to my house. In late September, looking out of the kitchen window I can see the twisted body of a briar bush with wild pink roses, the colour of candy, reaching upwards toward the light. I can see the farmer’s fields behind it. This became my inspiration for Hubba Bubba Candy Rose.
I noticed a wonderful contrast between horizontal and vertical line and decided to apply this to the abstract landscape. The briar bush was a mass of scribbled branches around the top with vertical stalks of grass and vines around the base. Using an abstract expressionist painting style I suggested this on the canvas and then created floral shape to bring a focus to the colour within the painting. Hubba Bubba pink prickly roses contrast against the deep greens and whites. Fresh and contemporary in design with a naïve simplicity which conveys an abstract suggestion of a wild hedgerow, Hubba Bubba Candy Rose is ready to hang.
