Sealtainn, oil on canvas, 100 x 100 x 3 cm
Sealtainn is a large abstract landscape of a bay in Shetland, the islands to the North of Scotland between Great Britain, the Faroese Islands and Norway. A beautiful, weathered land, whittled by winds and carved by the ocean with an age of history running through the hills. A calmness permeates the islands through the veil of storm, a calm resignation to the beating winds. Rolling hills and deserted bays define the islands with skies that open out wide and endless.
Inspired by the Shetland Landscape I wanted to use abstract colour to define the break of dawn across the bay. I created an expressionist under painting whilst reflecting upon the winds and weathered landscape. From this I worked with oil paint to identify and exaggerate the shape and colour of the bay. I wanted to portray a calm but weathered image using the drip to create wind and movement through the sky and ocean. Sealtainn is a large painting at 100 x 100 x 3cm. It is ready to hang.
